On the occasion of world environment day held on 5th June 2021 Green Water Revolution Pvt Ltd had organised a webinar on “Pollution Abatement: Law Enforcement, Governance and Prospectives”. The online event opened with India’s national anthem, an introduction to the 2021 theme of Ecosystem Restoration by Mohanish Jaju, and progressed with presentations by DR AB Akolkar (honourable guest speaker and ex-member secretary of CPCB), Mrs. Sayali Joshi (CEO of Shrishti Eco Research Institute), and Mr Yeshwant Kulkarni (MD of Green Water Revolution Pvt Ltd).

Honourable guest speaker Dr AB Akolkar emphasized upon the various areas we need to focus on such as pollution of water bodies, coastal pollution, air quality monitoring, depletion of groundwater table, solid waste management. He urged that a strong action plan for the in-situ bioremediation of polluted rivers and drains be made , and that there must be more focused initiatives at the district level for solving the aforementioned environmental issues. He supported and appreciated the indigenous technology and their sustainable solutions, and reiterated the usage of in-situ bioremediation and use of green technologies. In the Q&A session with DR AB Akolkar, three areas were majorly addressed: a) pollution abatement directives from central to state government, b) pollution abatement programme at district level, and c) challenges of business and marketing proposition of technologies with the government.

Almost everything that us humans do, from growing food to manufacturing products and to generating electricity, our actions have the potential to both pollute and restore the environment. Honourable guest Mrs Sayali Joshi emphasized upon the eco-technology based treatment of wastewater from point sources. Mrs Joshi introduced the Soil Scape Filter (SSF) - an eco-technology that is useful for the treatment of sewage from townships societies, resorts, hotels, as well as effluent from industries such as dyeing, printing, slaughterhouse, pharmaceuticals etc. SSF is a vertical filtration system through which wastewater is treated through layers of bioactive soil, fine and coarse sand, and gravel. In this, a combination of plants and bacterial culture is used to treat the wastewater. This technology has recently been enlisted as an ‘innovative technology’ by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, India. In the Q&A session Mrs Sayali Joshi enlightened us mainly on: a) adoption of ecotechnology, b) advantages of the SSF technology, and c) effective use of SSF technology to treat both sewage and sullage. The webinar concluded with a presentation by Mr Yeshwant Kulkarni, MD of Green Water Revolution Pvt Ltd. In his talk, he emphasized upon in-situ bioremediation of non-point sources like rivers and large natural drains using Green Bridge technology. In his words, “Rivers are important habitats for a large variety of animals and plants. Rivers play a vital role in connecting habitats but due to rapid increase in the built up area and unplanned administration of wastewater treatment in most cities, there is an urgent need for river rejuvenation”.
